In a groundbreaking appointment that reshapes a tradition that lasted nearly two centuries, General Marine Corps Vice Admiral Michael J. Borglute was tapped to serve as the next overseer of the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
If confirmed by the Senate, he will become the first Marine to hold the top post in the Academy’s 180-year history.
The move was announced by the Secretary of Defense on Friday as part of a broader slate of military leadership nominations. Borgschulte is currently the assistant commander of personnel and reserves at Marine Corps headquarters in Quantico, Virginia. He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1991.
The nomination comes in an unexpected leadership shuffle. Vice General Yvette David, who took over the command of the academy last year, was appointed for reappointment and reassignment to the Pentagon. She will be deputy chief of naval operations for operation, planning, strategy and combat development (N3/N5/N7), pending Senate approval and Congress waiver.

“I am honored to be nominated,” David said in a statement. “We look forward to continuing to serve America’s most powerful fighter planes.”
The secretary of Navy John C. Phelan praised both officers. He called Borgschulte a “decorated combat leader” with “strategic insights” and praised David for her “strategic vision” and “operational depth.”
Phelan also notes the importance of nominations and calls it a powerful signal for “naval integration” as Marines prepare to lead the Navy flagship officer training agency.
Founded in 1845, S has long been exclusively led by Navy officers. Marine Corps nominations show a sharp launch and signaling of evolving priorities in co-leadership and force development.
Phelan described the academy as “one of the most consequential institutions of American public life,” saying Borglucz’s leadership would help shape executives “for an increasingly contested world.”

Borgschulte was commissioned after graduating from the Naval Academy in 1991 and has been in combat roles with multiple commanders throughout his career. In his current position, he oversees the Marines’ personnel policy, preparation and strength structure.
A graduate of the Naval Academy in 1989, David made history and was the first woman to direct history. Her tenure at the academy appears to be over prematurely.
The director is traditionally expected to serve a three-year term before resigning. A news release from the Department of Defense (DOD) does not provide an explanation for the sudden change, and her next mission requires an exemption from Congress. Her next role usually requires a retirement transition, but she hasn’t completed it yet.

David’s husband Keith David’s rear left last year as commander of Navy Special Warfare. The couple met at the academy while both were Perve.
Fox News Digital contacted the Navy regarding the timeline for its leadership transition. The appointment is currently in the hands of the Senators and there is no official date yet for confirmation or modification of the command.

The Borgschulte nominations are part of a broader DOD leadership shakeup, including nominations for new service deputy chiefs and military-wide combatant command heads.
The Navy introduced Fox News Digital to a DOD release on the issue when asked for further comment.
