SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) – Emergency crews are responding to reports of a military plane crashing into San Diego Bay near Shelter Island, according to the San Diego Fire Department.
According to the SDFD, the incident occurred around 10:16am near Dr. Shelter Island in 1561.
The military confirmed that only two pilots were on the plane at the time. Authorities say both pilots of the plane were rescued and taken to UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest.
A spokesman for the US Coast Guard said both pilots on Fox 5/Kusi were able to safely leave and were rescued by a fishing boat after being in the water for just a minute.
The pilot was transferred to US Customs and Border Air and marine operations that happened to be on the scene at the time the crash crash occurred, the spokesman added.
A US Navy spokesman said the type of plane is the EA-18G Groller, and not the F-18, as previously reported speculated. The Coast Guard is strengthening the safety zone around the crashed area, moving other vessels away from the area.
Oil was observed to penetrate the waters of San Diego Bay as crew members tried to recover the plane’s bodies.
The crew of Fox 5/Kusi is on site. This is a developing story. Please check for updates.
