Don’t let anyone tell you that Paul Pierce is not the man of his words.
On Thursday, the Boston Celtics legend and former Los Angeles Clippers player promised to work in his robe somewhere in the San Fernando Valley, from his home to Fox Sports Studios in Century City.
reason? Overconfidence with his former team piercings.
After the Celtics blew a 20-point lead in Game 1 against the losers New York Knicks earlier this week, Pierce proudly declared that he was not worried about his team’s performance or the possibility that the emerging Knicks could abdicate the defending champion.
“If the Celtics lose Game 2 at home, I promise you, I’ll be walking here tomorrow,” Pierce braggedly as he appeared on FS1. “I’m walking here. I’m walking here. I’m 15 miles. I’m walking here. In my robe. No shoes.
The bets weren’t that wild. The Celtics are NBA champions and have a home court advantage over New York. Plus, it’s just flukes who will blow a 20-point lead as a favorite in the NBA playoffs… right?
It’s wrong.
On Wednesday, it was deja vu for Pierced and fellow Celtics supporters. The Knicks surpassed the Celtics 30-17 in the fourth quarter of the Eastern Conference semi-finals, with the clutch stole by New York Point Guard Jaylen Branson and a game free throw and a Mikal Bridge ahead, leaving the crowd at TD Garden.
The New York Knickerbockers count all the underdogs in the series and have a 2-0 lead back to the Big Apple.
And so, Pierce had to either chase his promises or be vilified as a liar.
However, Pierce significantly reduced that and posted a screenshot of his projected route shortly after the final buzzer rang. With two barfing emojis, the screenshot showed a 20-mile, eight-hour walk from home to Fox Studios.
A screenshot of Paul Pierce’s X account shows his prediction route to do good with bad predictions about his previous team.
And before the sun rose on Thursday, Pierce posted a video on social media, showing him going out for his morning commute – robes and everything. He was wearing slippers, but we give him a pass.
In the morning, Pierce checked in to Instagram to provide an update on his progress. He took the time to chat with fans who found him on the streets.
As of 12:30pm, he was living on social media and dealing with fans who took part in the final stretch.
“I think I lost five pounds,” he joked during the live stream. “My legs hurt, my toes. I need a shower.”
He also thanked the fans who tracked and gave him words of encouragement during his journey, and even those who watered him along his route.
“I’m not going to do this again,” he laughed. “You thought this wasn’t true? That’s true.”
With Fox Sports Studios in his vision, he told former teammate Kevin Garnett, one of the most beloved and iconic phrases in Boston’s sports history, “Anything is possible!”
