Law enforcement officials seized nearly $3 million worth of psilocybin mushrooms from a Lake Elsinore home and arrested one person this week as part of an investigation into an “extensive” mushroom cultivation operation, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. did.
Jesse Arroyo, 43, of Lake Elsinore, was arrested Tuesday on two felony drug-related charges and two felony weapons violations, according to Riverside authorities and online jail records.
The sheriff’s office said in a news release that Lake Elsinore law enforcement officials began an investigation after receiving a report of a suspicious package being delivered to a business in August. Officials said the package contained psilocybin mushrooms and marijuana products, and the sender was identified as Arroyo.
After executing a search warrant at Arroyo’s home, authorities said they located 445 pounds of vacuum-sealed mushrooms, 2,805 bags of mushrooms in various stages of growth, and a semi-automatic rifle and semi-automatic handgun with no serial numbers. Several weapons were seized.
Officials said the raid targeted a “large scale” psilocybin operation.
“The property included other structures used for the cultivation, processing, and storage of large quantities of psilocybin mushrooms,” according to the news release.
Authorities also seized a semi-automatic pistol suppressor and two ballistic vests.
Arroyo was taken into custody on Randell Road, according to the arrest report. Although you won’t find Randell Road on Google Maps, it runs through the sparsely populated hills north of the city.
