A newly completed mural to celebrate basketball legend, Coby Bryant and Luka Doncic adorn the streets of Beverly Grove in Los Angeles. The impressive artwork, scheduled to be finished by Monday morning, was created by artist Arutyun Gozukuchikyan.
The mural is a powerful tribute to both the late Bryant and the latest Lakers star, Doncic.
Gozukuchikyan inspired memorable photos of the two athletes and launched the project as soon as the storm clouds were cleared over Los Angeles. The original image captured in 2019 shows Kobe Bryant, who first met Doncic during a Dallas Mavericks game in Los Angeles, is watching basketball legends from the bystanders.
However, in the mural, Gozukuchikyan imagines a new moment. Donchić, a member of the Lakers, is now painted in purple and gold uniforms, while Kobe, a Laker, is shown in the colours of his iconic team.
“Since I heard that Luke was coming [the] The Lakers, I wanted to do a Lakers mural,” Gozkuchkiyan said.
His artistic approach honors both the athletes’ heritage, the mural captures the spirit of an era-defined NBA player, and the rising star is poised to advance its torch. “It’s always a surreal moment to do artwork on the streets, but I’m always happy to be able to do Kobe because I was a huge fan,” explained Gozukuchikiyan. “I want him to get involved, especially at moments like this.”
Remembered as one of the greatest players in NBA history, Bryant has won five championships and 18 All-Star selections in his illustrious career. After retiring in 2016, he held the record as the highest scoring laker ever, with 33,643 career points, and ranked him as the fourth-highest scorer in NBA history.
As for Doncic, the Slovenian star, his potential is already clear. The arrival of Doncic to the Lakers, five NBA All-Stars and five All-NBA first-team selection, adds another layer to the city’s basketball culture, combining past and future, and a vibrant new mural was fused together. Gozukuchikyan’s murals will be added to a series of artworks he has created to honor Bryant, including the famous Ventura murals that follow his tragic pass. The new work is located at the corner of Melrose and Harper, just next to the Carrera Café, across from the iconic Paul Smith Pink wall.
Despite his fame as a muralist, Gozukuchikyan is a businessman and father of three young children under the age of three.
The mural stands as visual testimony of the intersection of generations. One is rooted in Kobe’s legendary career, focusing on Doncic’s future promise with the Lakers. It is a fitting tribute to today and tomorrow’s heroes on the streets of Los Angeles.
