If being one of the estimated 750,000 people lining the Rose Parade route in balmy 60-degree weather on Wednesday isn’t your ideal way to spend the first day of the new year, don’t worry. There are plenty of places and activities opening around Los Angeles to get your 2025 off to a good start.
Watch a New Year’s Day movie or NFL game
Notably, AMC Cinemas and Regal Cinemas will remain open on New Year’s Day, showing both adult and family releases in the morning, afternoon, and evening. For those 17 and older, screenings include Nosferatu, The Unknown, and Baby Girl.
Movies that families can enjoy together include Mufasa: The Lion King, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Moana 2, and Wicked Sing Along.
If you want to see a movie before noon, you can purchase tickets for $8 for adults and children at the Terrace Cinema Box Office in San Pedro. You can reserve your seat online, but early bird tickets cost $9.75.
For those looking to cheer on their teams in the College Football Playoff, Inglewood’s new entertainment and sports venue, Cosm, is open and hosting Arizona State vs. Texas at 10 a.m. and Oregon State vs. Ohio State at 2 p.m. College, and offers three playoff screenings for Georgia State. vs. Notre Dame 17:30
Visitors can watch the action on an 87-foot wraparound LED screen and relive their vision of the Las Vegas sphere. Tickets for each of these games can be purchased online.
A closet refresh starts with a quick trip to the mall. Now’s your chance to grab some great deals during year-end sales and clearance. A number of shopping centers across Southern California will open on Wednesday, including Glendale Galleria, Westfield Century City, Citadel Outlets and Del Amo Fashion Plaza.
While many of these malls will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Citadel Outlets will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Americana at Brand will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Most grocery stores such as Target, Trader Joe’s, Trader Joe’s, and Walmart are open, but make a quick call to see if the store will have reduced hours before restocking your refrigerator. This will save you the hassle of traveling.
Theme parks and other attractions
If you want to turn your vacation into a mini trip, Southern California’s theme parks are the place to go.
Anaheim’s Disney parks, Disneyland and California Adventure, are both open starting New Year’s Day. Adult, one-day, one-park tickets start at $206 on Wednesday. The Christmas Fantasy Parade runs through January 6th and is scheduled for 2:30pm and 5:30pm on Main Street. The Downtown Disney District will also be open with free admission. Universal Studios Hollywood is open New Year’s Day. One-day general admission tickets start at $154 for adults on Wednesday, and CityWalk, the free-admission commercial district adjacent to the theme park, will also open, as well as Six Flags Magic Mountain, which will open on New Year’s Day. Tickets start at $49, and general day tickets give you the chance to see Holiday in the Park, which begins at 5 p.m. and features dazzling lights and festive entertainment. Knott’s Berry Farm will also be open. Tickets start at $81.99 online and $99 at the door. If you think theme parks are too crowded, why not plan some time at the Balloon Museum, which features the interactive inflatable installation “Let’s Fly.”
