A resurfaced photo of New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani turning the statue of Christopher Columbus has caused a backlash online, with some members of the Italian-American community.
“Takedown,” Mamdani posted in June 2020 with a photo that appears to be a gloved hand with her middle finger raised towards the statue of a famous Italian explorer in Astoria, New York.
Some Italian communities attacked the Post, according to reports by the New York Post, including Columbus Heritage Union President Angelo Vivolo.
“We defend Columbus Day and Columbus statues,” Biboro said.

“He is disrespectful to the Italian-American community.” Vivolo has been added. “If you make one community angry, you make every community angry.”
Joseph Squelsa, founder and chairman of the Italian-American Museum, suggested it was not wise to alienate Italians who reported that the New York Post accounted for 8% of New York City’s population.
“It would be tragic to eliminate such a large number of people,” Skerusa said. “It’s not inclusive. It’s exclusive. Who is the hero and who is not the hero? Columbus is our hero.”

The backlash against posts can also come from conservatives on social media.
“It won’t happen,” actor Joe Piscopo wrote on X.
“This guy needs to stop,” YouTuber Joey Salads posted on X.
“The most defining feature on the left is impossible,” journalist Megan Basham wrote to X.
“He disregards the important role Italians and Catholics played in the establishment of our country,” former Trump civil servant Ezra A. Cohen wrote in X.
“What a nasty socialist,” Florida GOP Chair Evan Power posted on X.

“This communist clown needs to be sent back,” Federalist CEO Sean Davis posted to X.
Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani’s campaign, but as of Tuesday morning it had not received responses about posts still appearing on his X account.
Mamdani, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, shook the political landscape last month when he won the New York City Democratic mayoral primary despite running with a track record including a platform filled with left-wing priorities and a previous call to give back police.
Born in Uganda to Indian parents, Mamdani has recently faced a controversy after being reported to have been identified as Asian and African Americans over his socialist views, and while applying for university, he was targeted by moderate Democrats and Republicans.
Mamdani is set to face off against several candidates in the November general election this year, including current Eric Adams, who runs as independent Republican Curtis Swawa, and former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
