Gov. Gavin Newsom released his latest housing initiative Tuesday afternoon, aiming to redevelop underutilized state land into affordable housing amidst affordable housing amid the affordable crisis throughout the state.
The “oversite programme,” led by the Department of General Services (DGS) and the Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), will help identify land in all states that are deemed suitable for affordable housing developments and available.
The new site allows developers to review available land and continue to submit proposals until awardable submissions are received and a final deadline is set for that particular site.
Southern California has already been awarded projects in Downtown Los Angeles, Montebello, West Covina and Riverside. Currently available plots of land include sections of Windsor Hills, Pomona, Chino Hills, Fontana and San Bernardino.
The state estimates that the new sites being released have the capacity of at least 2,000 homes since development.
“California is doing everything we can to ensure that all Californians have access to affordable housing as quickly as possible. Today, we continue to pursue a strategy to transform the property of an underutilized nation into a thriving, affordable living community for Californians.”
“We are leveraging technology and innovation to accelerate the proportion of affordable home construction in Golden State,” said Amyton, Director of Government Operations. “We look forward to suggestions from creative and resourceful developers who will strive to find a place that will bring home more Californians.”
According to the California Legislative Analyst office, housing across the state is about twice the national average, with “mid-rise homes” costing around $800,000. The US as a whole, that number is approaching $350,000.
