Newsom blows up the passage of a Trump-backed bill, calling it “a big, beautiful betrayal.”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has sharply criticised the newly passed legislation supported by President Donald Trump, calling it a “moral failure” that puts millions of Americans, especially workers’ families, students and the state’s most vulnerable communities at risk.

The law, called the “big and beautiful bill,” was passed by House Republicans and was subsequently signed by the president.

It is being promoted by Trump as the heart of his economic agenda. However, Newsom says the bill will give tax violations to ultra-wealthy people to surpass “care from cancer patients, food from children, money from working families.”

“This measure has now cemented Donald J. Trump’s legacy forever. He has created a more inequality, more bountiful and more dangerous America.

What the bill does

The drastic legislation cuts billions of dollars in spending from programs that provide healthcare, food aid, university aid and public safety resources, while allowing large tax cuts to high-income earners and businesses.

According to Governor Newsom’s office, the impact on California could be severe, including:

Healthcare: Medicaid reductions to California $28.4 billion. Up to 17 million people nationwide predicted they would lose coverage by 2034. It could force rural hospitals across the state to close or limit care options. Employment: Elimination of the Clean Energy Tax Credit from the Inflation Reduction Act could result in an estimated 686,000 California jobs being lost. Labor groups have called the law “the largest recruitment bill in American history.” Food and Family Aid: Reduce food aid by more than 3 million people nationwide. Increases the tax on parents who pay for childcare. Public Safety: $646 million cut from FEMA, impacting disaster preparedness. Reductions in the FBI, DEA and ATF reduce law enforcement staffing and capabilities. Nearly $500 million has been cut from cybersecurity efforts, raising concerns about national infrastructure security. Education and Student Aid: Limit access to Pell’s grants and financial aid. Eliminate loan exemption options and deferrals for borrowers facing financial difficulties. Environmental and Climate Program: Eliminate the wildfire prevention program, a direct threat to California’s fire-prone areas. It imposes new penalties on hybrid and electric vehicle owners, undermining green energy incentives. Reproductive Rights: Reduce planned parent-child relationships that put medical access to more than 12 patients at risk. Immigration and Family Separation: Expanding funding for immigration attacks, increasing the risk of family separation and workplace crackdown, particularly in agricultural areas.

Newsom accused President Trump and his supporters of using the bill to advance a political agenda that would benefit the wealthy while hurting working Americans. Meanwhile, the president called legislative victory a “democratic victory.”
