SACROMENTO – Gov. Gavin Newsom said Thursday that he is considering calling a special election on November 4th and asking voters to approve California’s new congressional map.
“I think there’s a growing realization in this country that President Trump will end next November if Americans are given a fair opportunity, voice and choice. We’re bringing Congress back. “The US president is aware of that, so he wants to rigg the game and change the middle of the rules.”
The governor called Jerrymander California in response to Trump’s requests to Texas and other states to reframe their maps to win seats in 2026.
“We’re going to respond in a transparent, honest way, but we’re going to respond,” Newsom says. “But I am no longer in a fetal position, a weak position.
Under Newsom’s plan, the California Legislature must vote to send voters a voter’s action.
Newsom said voters will be given a map of the new council district. On the first Tuesday of November, there will be a special election in which voters will adopt the map and ask the new districts to take effect until 2030 when California returns to its current independent constituency system.
California’s independent constituency committee will create a new map in 2032 after the next census.
The governor said he is in early planning status for the process and has no estimates yet for price tags for special elections across the state. Newsom called the cost of preserving democracy “valuable.”
“With many local elections already on the first Tuesday, we need a lot less resource than special elections that have not yet considered regular elections,” Newsmom said. “That could make a lot of sense in mitigating costs.”
Newsom has promised more information in the coming weeks.
