Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order on Thursday reaffirming California’s commitment to cleaning and trucks, launching the next phase of the state’s transition to zero-emission vehicles amid a sharp decline from the Trump administration.
The order will begin developing a new clean vehicle policy and direct state agencies to accelerate adoption of affordable zero-emission vehicles.
It also calls for recommendations to update state vehicle purchasing rules that support carmakers that comply with California’s Clean Air Standards, and to accelerate the adoption of clean vehicles.

“We will not make this illegal act by Trump and Republicans in the pockets of polluters out of the way of common sense policies to clean our air, protect the health of our children and compete at a global stage,” the news said in a statement.
The order comes after President Trump signed an executive order Thursday morning, blocking California’s first rule banning the sale of new gas-powered vehicles by 2035.
The resolution was approved by Congress last month and aims to counteract the country’s most aggressive attempt to phase out gas-powered vehicles. According to the Associated Press, Trump has signed measures to overturn state policies that curb tailpipe emissions in certain vehicles and reverse smog-forming nitrogen oxide pollution from trucks.
Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta have announced that the state will challenge the order in court.
According to the governor’s office, about one in four new cars sold in California is a zero-emission vehicle.
Data released in March also showed that more public and shared private electric vehicle chargers have been installed across the state than gasoline nozzles.
