Newsom visits South Carolina.

Gov. Gavin Newsom spends two days in rural South Carolina next week, promoting speculation that California Democrats are laying the foundation for the 2028 presidential election.

During his visits Tuesday and Wednesday, Newsom will stop in eight rural counties in the state “most economically challenged and environmentally vulnerable,” South Carolina Democrats said Thursday.

State Democrat chair Christol Spain said in a statement that tours of Newsom’s Pee Dee, Midland and Upstate areas aimed at showing rural voters in areas that “they have not held Republican control for decades.”

The Newsom visit is intended for a state that will become one of the first states to hold a Democratic primary in 2028. However, Lindsey Covia, a senior political adviser at Newsm, denied that the governor lays the foundation for the president’s run.

Covia said Newsom is “a straightforward focus” on helping Democrats reclaim the US House of Representatives in 2026.

Newsom’s tour with the South Carolina Democrats is called “On the Road With the Governor” and includes stops in Marion, Chesterfield, Marlborough, Lawrence, Pickens, Oconey, Carshaw and Florence County. The Post and Courier reported that Newsom’s schedule includes stops in small environments such as cafes, coffee shops, community centres and churches.

This tour will lead the newspapers to several counties in the state’s red counties. Seven of the eight counties are scheduled to visit President Trump in November.

The South Carolina trip is one of several overtures that Newsom has made to voters in the south in recent years. He was confused by then-President Biden in South Carolina in 2024. In 2023 he faced a highly publicized discussion with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. And in 2022 he bought ads in Texas and Florida, separating the governor due to their stance on gun violence and abortion.

It’s not just California Democrats visiting South Carolina this month.

Silicon Valley US officials held the City Hall in Palmetto State on July 19th and 20th, and are partnering with advocacy group Protect Our Care to mobilize voters in the Swinghouse area from cutting backs to Medicaid.
