Newsom warns Trump about red state rezoning: “Play on the fire”

Gavin Newsom offered President Trump a ceasefire proposal as Democrats line up in a naked knuckle match on the district change. There are no maps of red states and California redrawn congresses. He wrote in a letter sent to Trump on Monday morning.

“If you don’t stop, I will be forced to lead an effort to offset the rigging of the red state maps to redraw the maps of California,” he said. “But if other states cancel their rezoning efforts, we will be happy to do the same, and American democracy will be better for that.”

Newsom’s latest play will be featured at the weekend when dramas about re-zoning grew. Other blue state Democrat leaders argued on a political show on Sunday morning that they were ready to fight head-on over a map of Congressional districts that are usually tied to a census taken once every decade.

“Donald Trump is a con man. He tricked his wife, tricked golf, and now he tried to trick Americans from the vote,” Gov. JB Pritzker said on Sunday.

Newsom is at a central stage in this national political battle, allowing you to determine the outcome of midterm elections and, by default, how strong the president is. The Republican-led Congress handed over a “big beautiful bill” that would forcefully recharge immigrant enforcement. His signature issue. And while it was his whimsical oriented, the fact that Republicans have lost control of the House and Senate would be a major blow to his agenda.

The political battle of the nation has been at a number of crisis for both parties. Last week, Newsom hosted a Texas Democrat. Texas Democrats had left the state to prevent Congress from changing the map of Congress, under the threat of arrest and a $500 fine every day. He then vowed to “nullify” what happens in Texas.

“You risk the destabilization of our democracy and play with fire while you know that California can neutralize the benefits you want,” he told Trump in a letter. “This attempt to restrain Congressional maps before a single vote is held in the 2026 election is a humiliation against American democracy.”

Trump has pushed the Texas GOP to redraw maps of districts in Congressional districts, saying five seats are “entitled.” He then last week claimed that California was a “gerrymander” on CNBC, noting that the Congressional delegation had not matched the results of the presidential vote.

However, unlike some states, California has an independent district board.

On Friday, Trump spokesman Stephen Chen called Newsom the “loser of the highest order.”

California’s rezoning plans could be a dangerous gambit.

The plan calls for state legislatures to approve constitutional amendments that will establish new legislative voting districts created to make GOP members vulnerable. The bill will temporarily suspend the parliamentary boundaries created by the independent Constituency Change Commission in 2021 and create a special election on November 4th that will determine whether voters will temporarily suspend whether to adopt new maps for elections in 2026, 2028 and 2030.

If approved by voters, the measure includes a “trigger” that specifies that it will only take effect if Texas or other Republican-led states redraw the map to boost the GOP sheet before the midterm elections. California will return to existing rezoning laws after the next census and before the 2032 election.

Times staff writers Taryn Luna and Seema Mehta contributed to this report.
