A South Carolina Republican says he is ready to give California’s Democratic government Gavin Newsom a “huge southern welcome” when he arrived in the major presidential primary state on Tuesday.
Newsom is working with the South Carolina Democrats for a two-day meeting with state voters who officially held their first primary on the Democrats’ 2024 calendar.
A travel by a term restricted governor with a large national profile should spark a lot of speculation for 2028 as Newsom is considered a potential candidate for the next Democratic presidential nomination.
Republicans in states controlled by the GOP are paying attention.

“Gavin Newsom brings his crazy California agenda to Trump’s country. It’s up to us to show him what real leadership looks like,” the South Carolina GOP said in an email to supporters.
The email included Newsom’s itinerary during the opening day swing on Tuesday. This will stop at cafes, coffee shops, community centres and churches.

“We list the dates, times and locations below,” said the South Carolina GOP. “It’s hanging out on the card gear and flag, loudly and proud.”
State GOP Chair Drew McKissick insisted in another statement that “Gavin Newsom should sell crazy California somewhere. He won’t find many takers here.”
This was a similar message from South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, who launched a Republican campaign for the governor in 2026 earlier this year.
“We don’t need a twisted version of American Gavin Newsom in Palmetto,” Wilson argued in a statement. “If Gavin Newsom wants to test his national message here, he will encounter a unified, conservative front that knows exactly what is at stake.”
The South Carolina Democrats, who announced their Newsom trip last week, said it was part of an effort to bring the National Democrats to parts of Palmetto, which have been long overlooked and said to have been “remained” by Republican officials.

“Governor Newsom leads America’s largest economy and the world’s fourth largest economy, and he’s now meeting people in towns that have been sent by decades of Republican rule,” National Party Chairman Christer Spain said in a statement.
Newsom campaigned in South Carolina last January on behalf of then-President Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential primary. Newsom also visited Nevada, another early voting state on the party’s main calendar.
And Newsom then traveled to New Hampshire last summer on behalf of Biden.
The former president was the Democrats’ Standard Bearer of 2024 before dropping out of the race last July after a disastrous debate performance against the current President Donald Trump. Vice President Kamala Harris replaced Biden at the top of the Democratic national ticket.
South Carolina, New Hampshire and Nevada are competing for leadoff positions in the next presidential election cycle, with the Democratic National Committee set to decide on a 2028 calendar by early 2027.

Newsom has long been considered to have national ambitions and is considered one of many Democrats who can run for the party’s 2028 presidential nomination.

A two-day swing through South Carolina gives Newsom the opportunity to make connections not only with voters, but with local parties and elected officials. The relationship, forged this week, could potentially pay future dividends for Newsom if it finally decides to start a 2028 presidential campaign.
