The El Monte-based nonprofit is giving local fire victims one less worry as they tease homes damaged by the January brush fire.
Eton and Palisade fire survivors had a lot to deal with after losing their homes and items during this past winter disaster. While they continue to recover from their losses and look forward to the next, Home Bank LA is working to provide victims with a sense of home again by providing furniture.
“The need is epic,” said Georgie Smith, founder of Home Sense and Home Bank LA.
Home Bank LA comes from Home Sense of A Home, a nonprofit dedicated to providing housing to young people who are aging from foster parents. After the January fire broke out, Smith launched Home Bank LA as a new initiative focused on firing victims.
A few days ago, the nonprofit presented furniture to four families who lost everything due to the fire.
“When they actually enter that space, they finally see the future is the moment when they think they can actually rebuild,” Smith said.
Work created by Home Bank LA can be held up to demand by volunteers. In the organization’s warehouse, volunteers sort and find items from each home, design living and dining rooms, and load them into moving trucks.
“Whether they want a cafe vibe in their living room or it’s medieval modern, we really hear what their needs are,” Smith said.
Currently, around 1,000 households are on the waiting list to receive support from the organization. Volunteers and financial contributions welcome nonprofits to help them continue their mission.
