Nonprofits across the country helped local military families prepare for the school year by distributing free supplies-filled backpacks to Torrance children on Saturday.
Working with volunteers from Kellanova, Operation HomeFront said it distributed 160 backpacks on Saturday from 11am to 2pm at the brigade event to the annual school at the Western Flight Museum.
This initiative is designed to ease the financial burden of returning to school shopping for military families. Many face unique challenges such as frequent relocations, deployments and unpredictable training schedules. According to Operation Homefront, military children change schools from kindergarten to graduation on an average of six to nine times.

“School shopping season is stressful for any parent, but for military families, it often comes right after a big move,” the organization said in a statement. “The back-to-school brigade program is more than a pencil or notebook. It’s about all else being unfamiliar, reducing financial stress, and building a sense of confidence for children, and creating a sense of belonging and community.”
Since 2008, Operation Homefront said it has distributed nearly 600,000 backpacks nationwide, saving more than $60 million in school expenses.
Operation Homefront offers a variety of support services for military families, including financial aid and transitional housing.
