Stacey Hagberg, a nurse in Shasta County, took a break to do what she always does: scratch off the California Lottery game.
Only this time, she won $1 million.
“I started scratching and saw the 1 and the comma and thought, ‘Oh my god,'” Hagberg told California Lottery officials. “My co-worker thought I was saying she had done something wrong, so I said, ‘No, I think I just won a million dollars!’
Despite the influx of cash, Hagberg says she plans to keep working.
“Now that I have no debt, I can finally think about retirement,” she said. “I thought I was going to have to work until I died.”

The store where she bought her ticket, the ampm Store on Churn Creek Road in Reading, received a $5,000 bonus for selling the winning scratcher.
Mr. Hagberg joins what the California Lottery calls a “swarm of billionaires” who have recently made large fortunes, including four in Southern California.
Luz Meza, Reema Issa and Petra Romero each won the $2 million grand prize in the Instant Prize crossword scratcher game. Meza bought his ticket (fittingly) at Lucky Liquor and Mart on Lankershim Boulevard in North Hollywood, Issa’s fight was sold at the Westchester Mobile on West Manchester Avenue in Los Angeles, and Romero bought his ticket at the Rose – Won $2 million from scratches bought at Donuts & Ice Cream. In Inglewood, Sungwook Joo won $1 million playing Multiplier Craze. I bought my ticket at Mimilot DTLA on South Hill Street in downtown Los Angeles
