New York City filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration on Friday, seeking to reclaim more than $80 million previously sent to the city via the Federal Emergency Management Agency to house immigrants.
The lawsuit alleges that the fund had been previously approved and subsequently paid by FEMA, and it would only be removed from the city’s bank account on February 11th without notice or management processes.
The funds were cancelled after Elon Musk claimed government efficiency had found a $59 million FEMA payment to New York City. Trump later repeated Musk’s claims, claiming that “massive fraud” was happening.
New York City was awarded two separate grants during the Biden administration. One for $58.6 million and the other for $21.9 million — the city attempted to pay housing immigrants. An influx of immigrants entering the United States through the southern border.

The payments came under the Shelter and Services Program (SPP), which Congress allocated $650 million last year to help local governments respond to the immigration crisis. The number of less than 45,000 immigrants currently staying in New York City taxpayer-funded shelters has risen from 69,000 more than a year ago.
The lawsuit on Friday deals with the city’s legal department in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York by the city’s legal department, President Donald Trump, US Treasury Department, Federal Emergency Management Agency, U.S. Homeland Security It was submitted to the Ministry. .
The lawsuit accuses the federal government of violating federal regulations and the terms of SSP grants and abuses its federal powers and its obligation to implement a Congress-approved and funded program.

The lawsuit alleges that on February 19, the federal government belatedly provided the city with a “violation” letter that did not identify a city’s violation.
“In fact, it has not compiled the way cities have announced unfounded ‘concerns’ and have not performed the way in which cities have kept an unprecedented crisis at their doorstep,” the Legal Department said.
Citing the government’s actions as a “money grab,” the Legal Department said the letter was “just a covert” to hide the true purpose of the federal government.
The city is trying to get funds back and is seeking a preliminary and permanent injunction claim and a temporary restraining order (TRO).

“We’re going to work to ensure that the residents of our city get all the dollars they ow,” Adams wrote to the post office.
“Undoubtedly, our immigration system is broken, but the cost of managing an international humanitarian crisis should not fall in just one city, overwhelmingly. Enter our city in search of shelter .”
Meanwhile, New York City Director Brad Lander argued that the lawsuit came after he forced Adams’s hand into the matter. Adams fired fire from the New York Democrats over his decision to work more with federal immigrants in arresting illegal criminal immigrants in the Department of Justice’s efforts to dismiss corruption charges against him.
“After my office discovered that Elon Musk and his Doge Goon squad had stole $80 million from the city’s financial resources, we told Mayor Adams that the city’s lawyers would get the money back to the federal government. We successfully put pressure on them to sue,” Lander said in a statement.
“The lawyers who stand up to the conspiracy of President Trump and Eric Adams are praiseworthy and look forward to returning the money Donald Trump stole from New York.”
Lander will face Adams in the mayoral election later this year.
