New York Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani continues to walk past comments attempting to refund police, including a nation’s night against the city’s national night on Tuesday night, but his opponent, Mayor Eric Adams, has not bought it.
“When you decide to run for mayor, you can’t be public safety. That won’t happen,” Adams said Wednesday at a press conference.
“So are you just saying something to be chosen or are you saying something you believe? Look at my 30-year history. And you can see the consistency of safety in this city.

Mamdani faces intense rebound following the shooting of 345 Park Avenue in Manhattan last month, killing five individuals, including the suspect and NYPD’s Didalur Islam.
“Since the start of the campaign, it’s been my belief and whenever there were tweets cited years ago before I became an elected official, it made it very clear that, as I said last week, they weren’t a step away from my position as a candidate,” he told reporters at the event.
On the campaign trail, Democrats maintain his stance that there should be a creation of a Community Safety Bureau to deal with certain mental health-related emergencies, as opposed to law enforcement.

He was on Monday, D-Mass. He reiterated his stance at a press conference with Sen. Elizabeth Warren, saying that “forced overtime” is the main contributor to police officers leaving the NYPD and “hopes that “invite officers to respond to serious crimes and hire mental health professionals.”
He also mentioned this in his remarks at the event Tuesday, adding, “If you want to deal with the serious crimes that officers have signed up to join the department, you have to stop asking them to deal with almost every mistake in the social safety net.”
“There is no need to investigate to find out that the NYPD is racist, anti-fire weapons and a major threat to public safety,” he posted on June 28, 2020.
“We need a socialist city council to refund the police,” he wrote on July 3, 2020.

“The city council tried to have the NYPD cut its overtime budget by half,” Mamdani posted on X in December 2020. “They simply refused. They will not negotiate with this evil, corrupt institution. Please refund it. Dismantle it.”

“I will not refund the police. I will work with the police because I believe that police have an important role to play in public services, public safety,” he said at the time.
Mamdani is taking part in a close competition with Adams, the former police officer himself. Additionally, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has been running as an independent after losing the Democratic primary to Mamdani, while Republican Curtis Swawa is the Republican candidate in the November 4th election.
