New York City candidate Zohran Mamdani doubled his plan to tax “a richer, whiter neighborhood.”
The democratic socialist argued Sunday that his push towards white taxpayers is not racist, despite his agenda explicitly targeting white areas.
“It’s just an explanation of what we’re seeing right now,” Mamdani told NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday. “It’s not driven by race. It’s a more rating of which neighborhoods are taxed and are overtaxed.”
Mamdani’s policy proposal, “Stop Sqeeze for NYC homeowners” outlines his plan to “relocate tax burdens from excessive homeowners in the outer borough to more expensive homes in richer, whiter neighborhoods.”

The policy says homeowners in wealthy areas have “lower than fair share” and suggest that they adjust tax rates and valuation percentages to address the expected disparities.

When asked if he would change the language of the proposal, Mamdani biased, saying that the proposal was intended to ensure a fair property tax system, and that the language simply reflects observations.
“The use of that language is merely a neighborhood assessment,” Mamdani said.
“I’m just naming things,” he added. “What motivates me with this is creating an equitable system, not working in the opposite direction from the racial assessment of our neighborhoods and our cities.”

Mamdani also reiterated his belief that “we should not have a billionaire” despite the city’s campaign being believed to have 123 most billionaires in the world.

“Frankly, I don’t think there’s a billionaire,” he said. “That’s so much money in such a moment of inequality. And ultimately, what we need more is equality in our cities, our entire state and our nation.”
