Law enforcement officials provided an update on the discovery of a body on the beach in Rancho Palos Verdes.

According to preliminary information, the discovery was made Saturday around 1 p.m. off a hiking trail near Pelican Cove.

The exact location of the body is near Dina’s Viewpoint on Palos Verdes Drive South.

At a Sunday morning press conference, Lt. Steve DeJong of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said that when a female hiker who was hiking Dina’s Viewpoint encountered the body in the 31000 block of Palos Verdes Drive South, deputies admitted that it had responded.

She then called the sheriff’s department and the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded and as they searched the area down the ravine, they confirmed it was a human body. Lt. DeJong said the individual was pronounced dead at the scene by initial responders.

“meanwhile [the hiker] Lieutenant DeJong said: “As I was taking in the surrounding scenery, I looked down and noticed what I believed to be a body at the base of the cliff. The body was approximately 50 to 60 feet above the sea floor and was located near our shore. According to information, it appears to be a dead body.” There is limited expertise in identifying the decomposed body, which has probably been there for months…in a severe state of decomposition. ”

“Los Angeles County Homicide Detectives were on scene today conducting a death investigation to determine the cause of death. [looking into] Was this a slip and fall or was there some sort of foul?” he continued, without elaborating further.

Saturday’s discovery is that two human legs were found on Bluff Cove Trail near the 800 block of Paseo del Mar in Palos Verdes Estates, about 4.5 miles from the remains found near Dinah’s Viewpoint. This took place just a few days after.

The discovery was reported a day after two missing boaters whose boat was found less than three miles from where they left Cabrillo Beach. However, Lt. DeJong confirmed that the body discovered Saturday afternoon was unrelated to that investigation.

Authorities have been unable to establish a link between the missing boaters and the discovery of the severed leg earlier this week, adding that “all possibilities are being considered” but that the remains are those of the two boaters. He said there was no “direct indication” that this was the case.

On Wednesday, the Coast Guard called off the search for the two people on the boat, identified only as two men in their 50s, as there were no signs of distress. Search teams were using both air and sea methods to try to find those on the boat, but authorities found no evidence that the men might be alive.
