The 8-year-old was fatally injured by illegal fireworks on July 4th, according to the Buena Park Police Station.
On Friday night, officers patrolling the 8,000 block of Cornflower Circle said several people desperately carried the children to the residence after multiple fireworks exploded in the area. The girl was taken to UCI Medical Center where she was declared dead after suffering a fireworks-related explosion, police said.
The initial survey found that homeowners had fireworks displays on the streets. The fireworks began to misfire towards the residence where the girl was. These fireworks then set fire to the fire and hit the girl. Several others were present, but no injuries were reported.
The homeowner has been arrested. The charges are pending under the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
The girl’s identity has been withheld and the incident is under investigation by Buena Park Police, the Orange County Fire Department and the Orange County Sheriff’s Bomb Unit.
“According to investigations and assistance from both fire investigators and bombers, the numerous fireworks that exploded were illegal,” Buena Park Police said.
On Thursday, a fireworks explosion in Pakoima killed one man, seriously injured another woman, and burned four homes. Another explosion that day killed a person in Shimi Valley. Two people were seriously injured in a fireworks-related home fire in Hayward, a San Francisco Bay Area town.
Despite reminders from law enforcement regarding the dangers and illegality of unlicensed fireworks displays, many LA County residents continued to light fireworks on Friday night and early Saturday mornings. Video from the KTLA-5 shows multiple fireworks departing Saturday on the 110 highway with the street acquisition that stopped traffic.
The number of fireworks-related deaths and injuries has increased since 2023 last year, according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. In 2024, 11 people died from fireworks-related injuries, and an estimated 14,700 people were injured.
