ALBUQUAKE, N.M. (KRQE) — A deadly shooting has led the University of New Mexico to issue shelters at the Albuquerque Central Campus Friday morning.
Officials said UNM police received a report of gunshots fired at the Casas Del Rio (Gila) Student Housing Center, 420 Redondo Dr NE on Friday. Responding officers discovered that two individuals had been shot and killed. One victim died and the other suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The suspect remains massive and could still be on campus, UNM said in a warning.
A robo-aler was sent to social media around 6:17am local time, inviting authorities to ask people to avoid the closed central campus.
“Subjects with firearms are large and police are on the scene. If they continue to evacuate on campus, they will read the latest alerts sent just before 7am local time.
The university first alerted about the shooting around 3:27am.
Several law enforcement agencies are on the ground and are actively investigating. Anyone with information about the incident will be asked to call UNMPD at 505-277-2241.
The student housing building was also the location of the shooting at the University of New Mexico in 2022, and is considered a revenge of previous debate when a group of students attempted to assault a New Mexico State basketball player. Court documents show that a UNM student pointed a gun at him and attacked the athlete, and he then fatally attacked one of the attackers.
