Two people hospitalized in Riverside County on Friday were killed in the wrong direction of a crash.
The California Highway Patrol responded to a crash on the eastbound 10 highway west of the White Water Rest area around 2:40am.
A 25-year-old Palm Springs man driving a Volkswagen Jetta was traveling the wrong road in the highway lanes when he crashed head-on to the approaching GMC Envoy SUV.
The impact forced the SUV into the median median, and the suspect’s vehicle was forced into the path of another oncoming vehicle, the Toyota C-HR.
The Volkswagen driver was killed by the impact, CHP said.
The 49-year-old Los Angeles man, the SUV driver, was seriously injured in a crash. The Toyota driver, a 22-year-old La Quinta woman, suffered moderate injuries. Both were transported to hospital for treatment.
The events leading up to the fatal crash are under investigation. It is unclear whether alcohol or drugs are the cause, officials said. Neither the suspect nor the victim’s name has been made public.
