According to her family, her beloved great-grandmother was struck head-on by a drunk driver while driving home from a church service in the early morning hours of January 1, and later died at the hospital.
“She was safely home in 10 minutes,” the victim’s family wrote on the GoFundMe page. “She left us praising the Lord until her last day.”
The crash happened around 1:45 a.m. at Margaret Parkway and Pueblo Nuevo Drive in Mission Viejo, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
The driver, Geraldine Caicedo-Perez, 26, is currently charged with DUI and vehicular manslaughter, while the family of the victim, Ines Lagunes-Soto, 66, is We are mourning his tragic death.
Monica Lagunes, the victim’s daughter, told KTLA’s Chris Wolfe: “That woman was my mother. I’m so sad. She didn’t deserve to die. To be killed by someone who wasn’t in good health. Oh my God,” he said.
Family members said Lagunes-Soto, who lived in San Juan Capistrano and worked as a housekeeper for 25 years, always put her family first and was happiest surrounded by her many loved ones. .
“For me, this is something I will never get over, and I am extremely angry at the person who caused this accident,” Lagunes said. “I want them to pay for everything they’ve done.”
Caicedo Perez is being held in the Orange County Jail, according to the Sheriff’s Department, but his bail amount and next court date were not immediately disclosed.
“We keep our faith,” said Emmanuel Heredia, Lagunes-Soto’s grandson. “I think God has a plan for us and for her too.”
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the fatal crash and said anyone with information or evidence should contact the department.
