An Orange County Fire Department firefighter died in the line of duty early Sunday morning, authorities announced.
The fire was reported just before 5 a.m. at a home in the 29400 block of Point Royal, near Crown Valley Parkway in Laguna Niguel, OCFA said.
As crews were searching for residents at the scene, one of the firefighters, Kevin Skinner, a fire equipment engineer, complained of feeling unwell and was taken to a nearby emergency department.
Shortly afterward, he collapsed and did not survive despite the efforts of his fellow first responders.
Authorities confirmed in a press release late Sunday morning that he had gone into cardiac arrest.

Skinner joined the U.S. Navy in 1999 and worked for OCFA for more than 25 years, according to social media posts published by OCFA.
“[Kevin] “He was known for his warm personality and ability to make everyone feel welcome,” the post reads. “Our hearts are with his family, friends, and everyone who knew him during this incredibly difficult time. We are deeply grateful for Kevin’s dedication to protecting our community. We will never forget his sacrifice.”
He leaves behind a wife and four children.
