An inmate at a maximum-security prison died in his cell just two days after being arrested on theft and drug charges, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
Inmate Anthony Creston Brown, 45, of Cerritos, was found unresponsive at Theo Lacy Facility Sunday afternoon, authorities said.
Despite attempts by sheriff’s officials and correctional medical staff to provide life-saving measures, authorities pronounced Brown dead around 4:31 p.m.
“At this time, there are no suspicious circumstances,” the sheriff’s office said in a release. “The final cause of death will be determined following an independent autopsy and toxicology.”
On Friday, Dec. 27, officers with the La Palma Police Department arrested Brown on a warrant from Los Angeles County on suspicion of theft.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, police added charges of possession of drugs and paraphernalia in jail while booking Brown at Theo Lacy Facility.
Details are limited, and authorities did not immediately release further information about whether the theft committed by Brown or drugs contributed to his death.
The in-custody death will be investigated by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, and the Sheriff’s Office announced it will conduct an in-custody death investigation.
The Sheriff’s Office said no additional information will be released at this time.
