On Thursday night, California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara issued a mandatory one-year moratorium to protect insurance coverage for homeowners in areas affected by the Palisades and Eaton fires.
This suspension will prohibit insurance companies from non-renewals or cancellations until January 7, 2026.
Lara said in a statement that the rule applies to all homeowners within the boundaries or adjacent ZIP codes of the two fires in Los Angeles County, regardless of whether they suffered a loss or not.
“For anyone who survives a devastating fire, losing their insurance should never be a consideration,” Lara said. “This legislation gives millions of Californians some breathing room and hits the pause button on insurance non-renewals while people recover.”
Officials said residents can visit the Department of Health’s website to find out if their ZIP code is included in the suspension.
Additionally, if homeowners believe their insurance company is violating this law, they are encouraged to contact the department at 800-927-4357 or by chat or email at insurance.ca.gov. Recommended.
