There could be more than 100 teachers and staff jobs in the Pasadena Unified School District.
The district will vote on whether to approve the cuts at this week’s meeting.
Pasadena Unified is a school district that has faced great adversity since the Eton fire began on January 7th. The school was damaged. Families, teachers and staff were evacuated, and some lost everything.
But now the district says it needs to do these layoffs. Approximately 151 people could lose their jobs at the end of this school year.
A huge portion of them are elementary, middle and high school teachers.
Special education, bilingual instruction, social worker, behavioral health, and professional program positions are also at risk.
According to documents posted by the district, most of these jobs must be completed in the next academic year as a result of “reducing programs and services.”
Of these, 34 are at risk due to lack of jobs and lack of funds.
NBC4 reached out to both the school district and the union representing teachers.
School board votes on these layoffs will take place at Thursday’s meeting.
