Pentagon sends 1,500 more troops to southern border: US official

The Pentagon will deploy an additional 1,500 active-duty military personnel to the southern border by the end of this month, a U.S. official told Fox News on Wednesday.

It was not immediately clear what kind of troops would be sent, but the Trump administration is expected to make a formal announcement later Wednesday.

There are already 2,500 U.S. military personnel stationed at the southern border. The unit was ordered under Authority 10 in May 2023 under the Biden administration, approved by former Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, and will be deployed until the end of fiscal year 2025, according to a spokesperson for U.S. Northern Command. It is said that

An additional 1,500 military personnel will be deployed to various locations along the southern border by the end of the month, U.S. officials said.

The additional troops will perform the same roles as military personnel already stationed there, providing aerial reconnaissance, data entry, training, vehicle maintenance, detection and surveillance, and other logistics support roles.

The announcement marks the third time U.S. troops have been sent to the southern border in the past two years.

In May 2023, former President Joe Biden and Austin announced that Alejandro Mayorkas would send an additional 1,500 active-duty soldiers to the southern border for 90 days to help with the influx of migrants after pandemic-era health restrictions end. Approved the former Secretary of Homeland Security’s request. May 2023.

In March 2024, Austin approved another DHS request for 2,500 military personnel, including National Guard members, in Title 10 duty status.
