People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) praised a letter sent by a Republican lawmaker on Thursday to Dr Jay Bhattacharya, director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), urging agencies to stop using taxpayer dollars for animal experiments carried out at foreign labs.

The letter, signed by R-Texas Rep. Troy Nehls and R-Fla Sen. Rick Scott, highlights concerns about lack of surveillance and inadequate standards in certain foreign facilities.

Bipartisans will suspend animal research. Overseas, Republicans are led. Rep. Dina Titus, D-Nev. , Senator Cory Booker, DN.J.

Between 2011 and 2021, NIH issued more than $2.2 billion in grants for controversial research in 45 countries.

According to the letter, “studies” included altering cats to be born with deformed legs, bats that can infect humans with fatal, and human feces from mice that develop power.

Nehls and Scott noted that there is little or no testing in facilities where research is conducted or animals are housed, and that there is inadequate audit of animal research with foreign NIH funds, creating a major gap in monitoring and accountability for how taxpayer dollars are being used.

“We are deeply concerned that US taxpayer dollars are being used to fund harmful and abusive animal experiments overseas, which lack the same surveillance and accountability as US labs,” Nehls and Scott wrote in the letter. “…it’s a waste of resources to allocate to more ethical and effective research practices that don’t involve animals.”

Cathy Guillermo, Senior Vice President of PETA, said the organization is grateful to NEHLS, Scott, Titus and Booker for serving as the lead sponsor of the Cargo Act.

“This effort represents a key step towards stopping cruel and wasteful animal testing overseas, and is in line with the Trump administration’s broader shift towards more relevant methods of researching non-animals,” Guillermo wrote in a statement to Fox News Digital. “We are pleased to work with these dedicated lawmakers to pass the freight law and ensure that taxpayer money will no longer be used to support meaningless and unethical research.”

The cargo law was introduced following the PETA investigation at the Caucaseco Scientific Research Center, a trusted Columbia Institute in Colombia with a history of violating animal care standards.

The Caucaseco Scientific Research Center received more than $17 million in US funding, and the Biden administration’s NIH encouraged additional funding, even after trapping monkeys in filthy state and arresting them to die of infected wounds, and starving mice.

The PETA investigation reportedly resulted in multiple local government investigations, rescue of 108 monkeys and 180 mice, and withdrawal of research publications.

“The letter’s request for NIH to immediately stop funding animal testing in foreign labs is a critical step to protecting animals and ensuring taxpayer dollars are used responsibly,” writes Guillermo. “PETA remains committed to advocating legislative and policy changes that prioritize ethical, practical and non-animal research.”
