Defense Secretary Pete Hegses wrote a note on Friday to West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy and the U.S. Air Force Academy, saying all future admissions are based solely on merit.
“The department owes it to our country, our service members and young Americans applying to the MSA to ensure that admission to these well-known institutions is based solely on merit,” Hegses wrote in an academy’s memo.
He added that this would ensure that only “most qualified candidates” will be recognized.

“Choosing the best and best is lethal, eroding our fighting preparations and undermining the culture of excellence in our military,” he wrote.
He said that military secretaries are there for 30 days to prove that they do not consider race, ethnicity, or gender of their application, and that they are based solely on merit.

He said merit could be weighted by athletic talent, previous military service, performances at MSA prep schools, or other similar experiences.

“The department must remain steady in pursuit of excellence and never compromise on our high standards of MSA,” he concluded. “A powerful corps of officers is essential to ensure that the US military is the most deadly thing the world has ever known.”
