To avoid surprise the local pizza lovers, three different outstanding Southern California pizzerias, and the chef behind it, we have created a list of the top 100 best pizzas in the world at the 3rd Best Pizza Awards held in Milan. William Ju of Pizzeria Say, also known as the top pick for time-out pizza in Los Angeles, beat dozens of pizza oros in New York and Italian cities, taking 44th in the world. Justin de Leon of Apollonia’s pizza (another of our favorite pizza joints) ranked 58th, while Chris Decker of True Pizza at Dana Point, Orange County, won the highest position among SoCal recipients at No. 42.
The Best Pizza Awards, hosted by the Best Chef Award, first began three years ago and focuses on individual chefs, not restaurants or where they live. The European awarding agency was founded in 2015 by Polish neuroscientists and Italian gastronomy artists, and highlights a transparent “chef-driven” voting and selection process. Both Joo (Pizzeria sei) and De Leon (Apollonia’s) have previously been recognized by the Best Pizza Awards. 2025 was the first year Decker (True Pizza) created the Global Top 100 list of awards.

The Best Pizza Awards praised Joo for making Tokyo-style Neapolitan pie “technically refined and character-filled.” In particular, European awarding institutions have recognized Joo’s “salt punch” technique, which involves sprinkling salt on the oven for a clear shift in texture across the pizza. “Today, William Joe continues to explore and elevate pizza through simplicity, balance and deep respect for ingredients and tradition,” reads the chef’s official entry. Joo has also created a top 100 list of the best Pizza Awards for 2024 and 2023.
For Apollonian Deleon, who created the list in 2024, the best pizza awards featured pizza making from art schools and photos, particularly Apollonian’s “unconventional path to a game-changing square.”[s]”It features burnt cheese edges and airy interiors. As for the true pizza decker, his entry highlights his apprenticeship under the acclaimed Pizza Olo John Arena in Las Vegas.
