Her mother is dead and her son is in custody after police say they led them in a chase in El Cajon with her body in the trunk of a car.
The tracking began on Monday after 5pm. El Cajon police received a call from a man who said he had found his mother’s body in her car at Motel 6.
According to a police news release, the caller said his mother was visiting his sibling, 24-year-old Richard Leiba. However, when his mother did not return, he went to the motel to check on her, officials said.
When he got there, he looked inside the trunk and found his mother’s body, police said. The brothers then became conflicted and Leiba still puts his mother’s body inside and flees to the car. The car ran away when attacked Leiba’s brother, but the brother was not injured.
Officers responded to the scene and found a vehicle near the intersection of Madison and Magnolia Streets.
As officers tried to pull him, Leiba speeds and surrounds Spring Valley before beginning a chase of the car that began and ended in El Cajon. He attacked two other vehicles during the pursuit, police said. No one was injured in the collision, and Leiba was taken into custody after officers used a stun gun.
When officers opened the trunk, they found the body of 51-year-old Jamison Webster inside.
Leiba has been booked and held without bail for suspected murder, deadly weapon assault and avoidance of law enforcement, San Diego County Jail records show. The cause of Webster’s death is under investigation.
Elle Cajon Police Station first reported that the incident was being investigated as a possible lure.
News Station KNSD reports that witnesses at the motel heard the discussion before the pursuit.
“I heard you scream,” motel guest Ian Forbes told the news station. “I didn’t know what was going on.”
