Los Angeles Police Department officials shot a man experiencing a mental health crisis at Echo Park Monday afternoon.
Just before 4pm, Hector Alanis’ mother called police and reported that her son is suffering from a mental illness and could be dangerous to others,” police said in a news release.
When officers arrived in the 2400 block of Bellevue Avenue, they told them to find Alanis and surrender, but he would flee the location and lead the officers on Bellevue Avenue, a short foot eastbound from Coronado Street,” police said.
Officers saw him having what looked like a black pistol and as he entered the driveway he pointed the gun at the officer, urging the use of a 40mm low-lethal launcher and at least one officer, police said.
“Even though the suspect was hit by both a shooting and a 40mm [less-lethal] Projectile, he again continued to run until officers allowed Taser to be discharged from the hospital, neutraliss and officers allowed him to be detained without further incidents,” police said.
Alanis was treated at a local hospital for a bullet wound to his right arm, and police say he found a black airsoft gun that looked like a Glock pistol on the scene.
