A majority of Americans say they are optimistic about the policies President-elect Trump will pursue in his next administration, according to a new Monmouth University poll.
The poll found that 53% of Americans are very or somewhat optimistic about President Trump’s second term. This was a slight increase from the weeks before the first term, when just 50% of Americans said they were optimistic. Democrats are the only group of Americans who are less optimistic about President Trump’s second term than he was about his first term, with only 10% saying they are looking forward to the next four years.
“It’s not surprising that there are partisan rifts regarding President Trump’s policies,” said Patrick Murray, president of independent Monmouth University. “What kind of impact will it have on the people who voted for it?” The Institute for Public Opinion Research said in a statement:
The poll also found that President Trump’s least popular policy is the tariffs, with 47% of respondents saying they expected tariffs to hurt families and 47% of respondents saying they expected tariffs to help. Only 23% said they did. One of President Trump’s most popular policies is his plan to eliminate income taxes on certain wages, with 48% of respondents saying the plan would help families, compared to 48% who said it would hurt families. was only 15%.

Monmouth conducted the poll of 1,006 U.S. adults between Dec. 5 and 10 through telephone interviews and an online survey. The poll touts a margin of error of 3.9%.
The poll comes as President Trump gears up for his second term in office and has begun targeting people he sees as his enemies in the media. President Trump filed a lawsuit Tuesday against Ann Selzer, a registered pollster in Des Moines. The lawsuit alleges that the plaintiffs committed “brazen election interference” and fraud by releasing final 2024 presidential polls showing Vice President Kamala Harris leading in Iowa. Trump ultimately won the state by 13 points.

The lawsuit was filed Monday night in Polk County, Iowa, under the Iowa Consumer Fraud Act and related provisions. The group claims that “Des Moines Register (DMR) and Selzer” conducted a leaked and manipulated Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa poll to support now-defeated former Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. “We are pursuing accountability for the brazen election interference.” Published by Selzer and S&C and posted in the Des Moines Register on November 2, 2024 by DMR and Gannett. ” The lawsuit is also filed against Gannett, the parent company of the Des Moines Register, which also owns other publications, including USA Today.
Mr. Trump’s lawyers said Mr. Selzer “pride[s]his mainstream reputation for accuracy, even though there were egregious omissions in Democratic favor that have not been widely publicized.” “I want the public to believe that one of the missed votes was just a coincidence.” Carrier was leaked just days before the most consequential election in living memory, coincidentally pitting him against a Republican candidate. ”

The suit says Selzer, who worked in the industry for more than 35 years, “retired from polling in shame less than two weeks after this embarrassing defeat.”
