The much-anticipated Bakery & Cafe in Porto is one step closer to serving pastries, cakes and famous potato balls for visitors heading to “the happiest place on the planet.”
This month, Disney submitted permission to demolish this month at the building that previously housed Lovelair Bakery in downtown Disney right from the entrance to Disney California Adventure and Disneyland. The site, which now houses Count Sandwich, will become the future home of Southern California’s seventh Porto bakery location.
The location gets huge walking traffic. In 2023, at least 27 million visitors were streamed through a shopping district known as Downtown Disney to join Downtown Disney and Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, according to the annual report from consulting firm AECOM and Theme Entertainment ASSN.
Starting in 1976 as an extension of the business of founder Rosa Porto in Cuba, Porto’s bakery, started in tiny spaces at Silver Lake Strip Mall, has been Los Angeles’ beloved institution for decades. The bakery’s six-place line slowly snakes through the doors over the weekend, and yellow boxes filled with pastries often appear on flights from Los Angeles.
When Cuban bakeries opened their first Orange County location in 2017, hundreds of fans flocked to Buena Park.
The permit filed with the Anaheim Planning and Building Department calls for the 2,610-square-foot bakery and restaurant to be demolished and two theme park ticket booths removed. According to City Records, the utilities will be removed at each site and the foundation will be removed.
It is not clear when the bakery location in Porto in Anaheim will open the door. Disney officials and Porto representatives did not immediately send an email back to them for comment.
The announcement of a downtown Disney spot in 2022 created a lot of excitement. La Brea Bakery was closed the following year to make way for its beloved Los Angeles facility, but construction did not begin anytime soon.
The delay prompted rumors that Porto had abandoned its site plans, but the bakery reassured people’s hearts last year with the announcement that it would arrive at the outdoor shopping mall in 2025.
