A 16-year-old bicyclist was struck and killed in the parking lot of Los Angeles’ BMO Stadium on Friday in what authorities said was a possible case of road rage.
The boy was among 40 people riding bicycles near Exposition Park, home of Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles FC, when an altercation broke out with the driver at around 4:30 p.m. Authorities said the cyclist was traveling southbound on Figueroa Street when he entered the stadium’s closed parking lot, where the driver followed him inside.
The driver of the sedan accelerated toward the cyclist, struck the victim and fled the property south of downtown Los Angeles, CHP said.
Details of the altercation that led to the accident have not been released.
“This is a tragic incident and 100% preventable and avoidable. It should never have happened,” said CHP Sgt. Dan Cain said at a press conference at the scene after the crash.
“We encourage that driver to come to the CHP station and talk to us. Tell us what happened. No parent should have to go through that.”
No arrests were reported Saturday. A detailed description of the driver and vehicle is not yet available.
Investigators said they were interviewing multiple witnesses.
