A pregnant Santa Barbara woman has died after taking a nosedive while hiking in Greece while on vacation.
Clara Thoman, 33, fell approximately 164 feet into a canyon on the Greek island of Crete on December 23, The Greek Reporter reported.
After her partner called for help, paramedics rescued her from the ravine and transported her to a nearby medical facility and then to Chania General Hospital. She suffered multiple fractures to her skull and chest, and her fetus died in the fall, according to Greece Reporter and another local news agency, Nea Kriti.
Thoman, a science teacher at Goleta’s Dos Pueblos High School, was pronounced dead on December 29, according to news outlets.
“The damage Clara has suffered is insurmountable and she has been declared brain dead…we are all heartbroken,” her family wrote in a post on Caring Bridge.
According to a statement from Chania General Hospital, her organs including kidney, liver and cornea were donated.
Thoman was on vacation with her partner, Elliott Finn. The couple lived in Goleta. Dos Pueblos High School Principal Bill Woodard expressed sadness over the death of his beloved teacher.
“There are no words to describe the sadness we are all feeling,” Woodard told Santa Barbara-based news site Noozhawk. “MS. Thoman was a wonderful teacher who was so kind, loved her students, and loved science. Our hearts break for her family and all of us who feel this loss.” is.”
