(KTLA) – A Santa Barbara County schoolteacher who was six months pregnant died after falling while hiking on the Greek island of Crete late last month, according to multiple reports.
According to a report in the Los Angeles Times, the tragic incident occurred when Clara Thoman, a 33-year-old science teacher at Dos Pueblos High School in Goleta, and her partner, Elliott Finn, were traveling on vacation. It occurred on the 23rd of May.
First responders and construction workers pulled Thoman, who had plummeted 164 feet down a ravine, from the area and rushed him to the hospital after Finn called for help, according to Santa Barbara County news station Nohawk. He said he struggled for hours.
The 33-year-old died from the fall and Mr Thoman suffered severe fractures to his chest and skull. Greek news outlets cited by the Times reported that she was pronounced dead six days later, on December 29.
The Times reported that heartbroken family members said in a post on the Caring Bridge website that Thoman’s injuries were “insurmountable” and she had been declared brain dead.

The Greek Reporter reports that the science teacher is registered as an organ donor in the United States and that her family, who had traveled to be by her side, honored her wishes and donated her kidneys, liver and corneas to the patient.
