Organizers for Los Angeles’ 2028 Olympics have released their first competition schedule, outlines the timing and the order of events for what they call the most ambitious program in Olympic history.
The game is scheduled to begin on Friday, July 14th, 2028, with the ceremony being held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Sophie Stadium in Inglewood. The closing ceremony will be held at the Coliseum on Sunday, July 30th.
The organizers say athletics and swimming competitions will be switching for the first time for several weeks. The athletics event takes place in the first week, but swimming moves to week 2 and closes the game on day 16. The marathon event takes place on the final weekend and coincides with tradition.
The first Olympic medal will be awarded on the first day of the triathlon event in Venice Beach.
Day 15 will host the most medal event in 16 team medal matches scheduled for what is called “LA28 Games’ most action-packed single day.” The finals and 16 team medal matches in 19 individual sports.
“We couldn’t be more excited to mark this moment in exactly three years since Los Angeles’ third Olympics in 2028,” LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover said in a statement. “There’s so much to celebrate today… we’re the first to see the Olympics’ competitive schedule, meticulously developed to ensure that the world’s best athletes can compete in LA. We’re energized by today’s milestone and we’re continuing to focus on what’s going forward.”

This schedule was developed in conjunction with the Executive Committee of the Olympic Broadcasting Services, the United Nations and the International Olympic Committee.
Additionally, organizers announced that Playla, the city’s youth sports initiative supported by LA28 and the International Olympic Committee, has surpassed 1 million program registrations. The program offers access to over 40 Olympic and adaptive sports for children aged 3-17.
Los Angeles previously held the Olympics in 1932 and 1984. This is the first time in a city that will host the Paralympics. The 2028 Games plan is managed by a privately funded nonprofit organization.
A more detailed version of the Olympic schedule, including specific medal events and gender order, is expected later this year.
