It’s officially summer. In the next few days and weeks, close some hot temperatures yourself.
And you may also need to prepare for strengthless time.
Edison in Southern California has already predicted a possible power shutoff called the public safety power shutoff hat.
“PSP stands for public safety electricity closures and is a program that uses sites that preemptively energize the circuits that are supplying customers, so we protect against the risk of wildfires associated with dangerous conditions affecting our community.”
He said his team has seen extreme situations since the 1890s, like 100 miles of wind between Palisade and Eton fires, as well as fuel throughout Los Angeles County, increasing the likelihood of a major wildfire.
“We’re looking at things like strong winds, dry fuel, low humidity. This is everything we call the fire probability index. This is what encourages fuel to ignite and spread, and that’s predicted by your own meteorologists and other experts,” Brady said.
Within the SCE Emergency Operations Center, over 1,800 weather stations in Southern California are used to track wind speeds.
“The reason you need so much is because you wanted to energize as much of the circuit as possible so that we could help minimize the impact on those customers,” he said.
“We will try to notify you up to three days before the expected event, so that we can start preparing,” he added.
It is essential to prepare for a long period of time without power. From preparing an application kit, working on a flashlight, to knowing how to open an automatic garage door when the power goes off.
And don’t forget that getting back online takes time.
“So, in order to recover the circuit, those that have not disappeared must wait for those dangerous conditions to fade. We start to see wind speeds settling down, humidity rise and potential index values begin to level.
SCE, which serves an estimated 15 million customers in Central, Coastal and Southern California, said it will send ground crews to communities that have stopped to help its neighbors.
The utility also offers rebates of generators and battery supplies, as well as free offers for people with specific medical needs. Learn more about these resources here.
