The ignition has started due to prescription burns in Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
The Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks firefighting program confirmed the news in a media release. The ignition, which began on Monday, is planned for the event, called the 2025 Big Stump East Prescription Burn until Tuesday.
“The burns from this formula deal with about 126 acres from the Kings Canyon National Park entrance station past the large stump picnic area and to the intersection of Highway 180 and the General’s Highway,” officials said in a media release issued Monday morning.

Access to the eastern part of the Big Stamp Trail will be temporarily closed during ignition. However, visitors can still reach the general Grant Tree Trail.

Anyone interested in going to the park is immediately advised that in addition to delayed traffic, there is a moderate smoke effect in the Grant Grove area. At night, smoke could be “identifiable” in the park’s low elevation, Hume Lake Ranger area (in the Sequoia National Forest), and corridors on Highways 245 and 180, officials said.
Authorities say firefighters monitor fire behavior, take weather measurements at all times to ensure operations are being carried out safely and meet their targets. The crew is ready to stop the burns if conditions become inappropriate.

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park are adjacent to each other in the Sierra Nevada. Both parks are operated under one unit by the National Park Service. Last year, over two million visitors came to the park to view some of the world’s largest trees, in addition to the stunning hills, canyons and caves, which are naturally stunning.
Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the US, is located within Sequoia National Park. The Sequoia and Sierra National Forests are also adjacent to two adjacent national parks.
