President-elect Donald Trump appeared to weigh in on Saturday in a heated debate among supporters of Elon Musk’s skilled worker visas, telling the New York Post, “I’ve always liked visas.” he said.
The comments came as Trump supporters have been furious with each other online for several days over H-1B visas. Immigration hardliners, including Trump supporters like Laura Loomer and Steve Bannon, support “America First” policies focused on creating jobs for Americans.
But Musk, the world’s richest man, and other tech giants have long supported the H-1B visa program, which allows companies to hire skilled workers from abroad. As Musk posted earlier this week, they claim that “there is a severe shortage of highly talented and motivated engineers in the United States.”
In another post late Saturday night, Musk wrote: “H1B is the reason I’m in America with so many important people who created SpaceX, Tesla, and hundreds of other companies that made America strong.” he added. Furthermore, he added: “Take a big step back and fuck me in the face. I’m going to go to war on this issue that you’ll never understand.”
Bannon, who served as Trump’s chief strategist, responded by calling Musk a “toddler” on the social media platform Gettr and saying, “Someone please call Child Protective Services. We need a ‘wellness check.’ There is,” he posted. About this toddler,” he posted a link to Musk’s tweet.
Shortly after, Trump spoke on the phone with John Levine of the New York Post. That’s why we have them. ”
He added that Trump “has a lot of H-1B visas on my property.” I have believed in H1-B. I have used it many times. It’s a great program. ”
It was not immediately clear whether Trump was referring to real estate dependent on the H-1B program. His golf courses and clubs, including Mar-a-Lago, have long relied on foreign workers who come to the United States under the H-2B program to work as housekeepers and cooks. The H-2B visa program allows employers to import unskilled workers from overseas for temporary work if eligible U.S. workers do not want the work.
