President Donald Trump suddenly fired Congressional Carla Hayden librarian on Thursday as the White House continues to wipe out the federal government of those perceived to oppose his agenda.
Hayden was notified by the White House Presidential Personnel Office late Thursday by email, according to an email obtained by the Associated Press. Hayden, who took office from the Senate in 2016, was the first woman and the first African-American to become a librarian in Congress.
“Carla” email has begun. “On behalf of President Donald J. Trump, I am writing to let you know that your position as a librarian in Congress has soon ended. I would like to thank you for your service,” a spokesperson for the Library of Congress confirmed that the White House told Hayden she had been fired.
With the 10-year period expired next year, Hayden was being repulsed by conservative advocacy groups that have vowed to eradicate those who are in the way of Trump’s agenda. The group, the American Accountability Foundation, accused her and other library leaders of promoting children’s books with “radical” content and literary material written by Trump opponents.
“The current #LibrarianofCongress Carla Hayden is awake, anti-Trump, and promotes transgender children,” the AAF said just hours before the shooting was made public on the X account early Thursday. “It’s time to let her out and hire a new guy for work!”
Around the government, Trump has ruled out officials from the Justice Department to the Pentagon and beyond that he believes he is not in line with his agenda. Sometimes, terminations occur after conservative voices kick officials out of criticism as single.
Earlier on Thursday, a representative Federal Emergency Management Agency manager was pushed out a day after testified that he had not agreed to the proposal to dismantle the organization. Trump suggests that individual conditions, not FEMA, should lead in responding to hurricanes, tornadoes and other crises.
Half a dozen top officers have been fired from January at the Pentagon. The imbalance between the only two women who work as four-star officers, including CQ Brown Jr. co-head of CQ Brown Jr., as well as other senior female staff members, was also fired.
The unexpected move against Hayden on Thursday infuriated Congressional Democrats, who first revealed their firing.
“All is enough,” said Chuck Schumer, Senate Democratic leader in New York, who called Hayden a “trailblazer, scholar and civil servant of the highest order.”
Connecticut Rep. Rosa Delauro, a top Democrat on the House Approvals Committee, said Hayden was “mercilessly fired” by Trump and demanded an explanation from the administration as to why she was rejected.
“Hayden spent her entire career serving people from helping children learn to read some of our country’s most precious treasures,” said Rep. Joseph Morell of New York, a top Democrat on the House Trustees’ Committee, which oversees the libraries.
“She’s an American hero,” he said.
With its stately building across from the US Capitol, the Library of Congress features a vast collection of national books and history that will be made available to the public and lawmakers. It houses almost 20 presidents and more than three dozen Supreme Court judges papers.
It also has rare books, prints, photographic collections, music and most of the precious artifacts. Like the flute owned by President James Madison, it was performed in a 2022 performance arranged by singer and rapper Lizzo.
Democratic leaders praised Hayden, a longtime leader in Baltimore’s library system, and served to help modernize libraries and make them more accessible with initiatives to rural communities and online.
House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries, DN.Y. praised Hayden as “a skilled, principled and well-known Congressional librarian.”
“Donald Trump’s unfair decision to fire Dr. Hayden in an email sent by a random political hack is dishonorable and is the latest in his ongoing efforts to ban books, whitewash American history and bring the clock back,” Jeffries said.
“The Library of Congress is the People’s Library and we are accountable for this unprecedented attack on the American way of life.
New Mexico Sen. Martin Heinrich, a top Democrat on the Senate Committee, which oversees library funding, said the shooting that came at 6:56 p.m. “Takes attacks on American libraries to a new level.”
“Dr. Hayden has dedicated her career to making reading and knowledge pursuits accessible to everyone,” he said.
Acclaimed Hollywood Director Ava Duvernay was awarded the honorable and great American medal in American history for his lifelong contribution to American ideals and ideas. The award comes after President Donald Trump signed an executive order targeting the Smithsonian to eliminate “schizophrenia or anti-American ideology.” Walter Morris of News4 reports that the legendary filmmaker is pushing back.
Leader and Associate Librarian Robert Newlen said in another email the Associated Press would be acting as council representative “until further instructions.”
“I promise everyone will provide information,” he wrote to a colleague.
Hayden recently spoke about how the library has changed her life and opened her to the world.
“The library is a great equalizer,” she posted to X last month on National Library Week.
“And especially when you have a free public library, it says, “is the centre of opportunities for people for every walk of life, and you’re giving them the opportunity to choose which information, entertainment and inspiration mean the most to them.”
