President-elect Trump on Monday doubled down on his calls for the United States to take ownership of Greenland in a funny social media post.

The move comes as the president’s son Donald Trump Jr. prepares to travel to Greenland on Tuesday. The visit will be in a personal capacity and he has no plans to meet with any government officials.

“I hear the people of Greenland are MAGA,” President-elect Trump said in a post on Truth Social. The Republican party attached a video purportedly showing Greenlanders asking the United States to buy their country.

“If you could say anything to Trump, what would you say?” a woman can be heard asking a man in the video.

“Buy us. Buy Greenland,” the man in the MAGA hat replied.

He added that Greenlanders “love Americans” and want to be free from the Danish government.

“We don’t want to be colonized by the Danish government any longer,” he explained. “We are deceived [off] every year [with] Minerals from Greenland. We are the richest country in the world. and we can’t use it. Denmark is using us too much. ”

President Trump acknowledged in his message that he plans to visit Greenland in the near future, and that his son Donald Trump Jr. is also expected to arrive there soon. The president-elect said he planned to visit some of the island’s “greatest areas and sights.”

“Greenland is a wonderful place, and its people would benefit tremendously if it became part of our country,” President Trump wrote on Monday. “We will protect and cherish it from a very evil outside world. Let’s make Greenland great again!”

Trump’s latest post comes two weeks after he first made headlines by expressing support for U.S. ownership of Greenland.

”[F]or for purposes of national security and freedom around the world, the United States feels that ownership and control of Greenland is absolutely necessary,” the president-elect’s Truth Social post reads. .

In response, Greenland’s Prime Minister Moute Egede declared his country interested in gaining independence from Denmark.

“The upcoming new election period must build on the foundations laid so far and build on these new steps together with the people,” Egede said. “Now is the time for us to step up and shape the future, including who we work closely with and with whom we trade.”

President Trump has been considering purchasing Greenland for several years. In 2019, he floated the idea of buying Greenland, calling it a “massive real estate deal.”

“There’s a lot that can be done,” Trump said at the time. “Denmark is losing nearly $700 million a year on this issue, so it’s been hit very hard.” “So they’re going to have huge losses, but strategically that would be good for the United States. And we’re a big ally of Denmark, we’re helping Denmark, we’re protecting Denmark. .”

In an interview on “Fox News Sunday” about President Trump’s comments, then-White House chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow acknowledged the president’s sentiments were genuine.

“Greenland is a strategic location and has a lot of valuable minerals,” Kudlow explained at the time.

“I don’t want to predict the outcome. I’m just saying that a president who has some knowledge of real estate purchases would want to consider it.”
