President-elect Donald Trump wants the Gulf of Mexico to become known as the “Gulf of America.”
At a press conference at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday, President Trump said he intended to make changes, but gave no details on when or how.
“We’re going to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Gulf of America, what a beautiful name,” he told reporters. “And that’s appropriate.”
“We’re going to change because we’re doing most of the work there and it’s ours,” he said.
The names of natural features in the United States are maintained by the U.S. Board on Geographical Names, a division of the U.S. Geological Survey.
The commission was established in 1890 and codified into its current form by public law in 1947 to maintain uniform use of geographic names across the federal government, according to the commission’s website.
According to the agency, boards typically “refrain from changing names unless there is a compelling reason.”
Any person or group can suggest a name change.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., posted on X shortly after President Trump’s speech that she had instructed her staff to begin drafting a bill to rename bodies of water.
The comments are the latest in a series of proposals President Trump has made regarding the United States’ neighbors, including acquiring Greenland, reclaiming the Panama Canal and annexing Canada.
