Prince William said the past year had been “brutal” as his wife and father announced his cancer diagnosis.
“It’s been the worst, probably the toughest year of my life,” William said after completing a week-long tour in Cape Town, South Africa for the 4th Earthshot Awards, telling Sky News, NBC News’ international partner. told.
Charles III announced his cancer diagnosis in February after undergoing surgery for enlarged prostate. Buckingham Palace said at the time that “other concerns were noted” during the surgery and further tests confirmed the presence of cancer.
After his treatment progressed, he resumed his royal duties in April.
In a video address released in March, the Duchess revealed that she had been diagnosed with cancer and was “undergoing preventive chemotherapy”, following widespread speculation about her health and whereabouts. She said the cancer was discovered during major abdominal surgery in January.
In September, Duchess Kate finished her chemotherapy treatment and said she would return to a light royal schedule until the end of the year.
Neither Charles nor Duchess Kate have revealed what type of cancer they have been diagnosed with. Buckingham Palace announced that the king did not have prostate cancer.
Although Duchess Kate has largely disappeared from public view in the months since announcing her diagnosis, state events and other ceremonies normally attended by members of the royal family have not been canceled.
“It’s been really difficult trying to get everything back on track through everything else,” Prince William told Sky.
“I’m so proud of my wife and so proud of my dad,” he said, adding that Kate was “amazing” and “doing great” despite the difficult circumstances, according to Sky magazine.
Skye noted that the prince looked more relaxed than usual at the Earthshot Awards.
