Pro-Palestinian protesters are suing UCLA for camp attack

A group of activists released a lawsuit against UCLA on Thursday, claiming that the university failed to protect protesters attacked at Palestinian camps last year.

The California chapter of the Council of America and Islamic Relations held a press conference near UCLA’s Ruskin Conference Center, where it detailed the trauma that counterproteters endured when they attacked the camp during a demonstration on April 30, 2024, and the trauma that plaintiffs endured at other points.

Last spring, pro-Palestinian protesters built an encampment in the middle of the campus and launched Hamas attacks on Israeli civilians in order to protest Israeli military response to October 7, 2023. The camp blocked access to several campus buildings, and Jewish students complained that it created a hostile environment.

Only a few brawls were reported as the camp grew for several days. Then, on the evening of April 30th, pro-Israeli protesters attacked the camp, resulting in a skirmish that lasted several hours before police entered.

The next day, university police, along with other law enforcement, forced cleaning the camp, resulting in several arrests.

“It quickly became clear that there was no similarity in protections for the physical safety of camp members, and that the mob had successfully transformed a peaceful, interfaith community into a place of terror,” the lawsuit alleges.

The uproar over the university’s handling of protests has replaced the UCLA police chief.

The Scathing Independent Report was released in November, with UCLA claiming there was “institutional paralysis” during the event. Several law enforcement members told interviewers that they didn’t know who was in charge during the violence erupted on campus and that explanations about the situation were inadequate.

Counterproteters will attack a pro-Palestinian campus set up on the University of California, Los Angeles campus due to a collision erupting in Los Angeles on May 1, 2024.

It was not clear what the California branch of the Council of America and Islamic Relations wanted in the lawsuit.

Earlier this month, the Department of Justice launched a civil investigation into the University of California system on systematic anti-Semitism allegations on campus related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
