The Democrats are gaining brain trust in a new policy called Project 2029. This is an initiative aimed at shaping the party’s long-term vision and regaining electoral power.
But inclusion of longtime party insiders, particularly former president Joe Biden’s national security adviser Jake Sullivan, has raised eyebrows throughout the political spectrum when there is a broad agreement that Democrats need fresh ideas and new voices.
“We’ve seen a lot of effort into making it,” said Brett Brune, former director of global engagement at the Obama White House. “Jake’s involvement, not to mention leading this, it only leads to stupid, superficial changes.”
“We need to look at the mirror for a long time and realize that these Democratic leaders have played a major role in bringing this situation.
Democrats take pages from conservative playbooks in new project 2029

Modeled after the Heritage Foundation’s Conservative Project 2025, Project 2029 brings together famous Democrat veterans to outline the policy roadmap. After standing up to President Donald Trump for more than anything else, the group is dedicated to helping Democrats define policies that will allow them to win the 2028 election.
The initiative, first reported by the New York Times, is led by a cast of familiar faces, including longtime Democratic strategist Andrei Cherney and Sullivan, Biden’s domestic policy advisor, Nera Tanden. New America CEO Anne Marie Slaughter. Justin Wolfers, University of Michigan economist. Jim Kessler, co-founder of Thirdway. Felicia Wong, former president of the Roosevelt Institute.
But Sullivan’s role drew certain criticism from both Republicans and progressives.
Sullivan was Biden’s top advisor during his chaotic 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan, resulting in 13 US service members being killed. He reportedly offered to resign at the time after the evacuation did not go as planned.
He also set fire to the Biden administration because of its failure to help Israel and Hamas reach a permanent ceasefire and because of its Ukrainian policies.
“Why isn’t Jake Sullivan working for Chipotle?” On a 2024 podcast, he left Stephen Moore, founder of the Ukrainian Freedom Project.
“Jake holds both a national security advisor and Biden world position and is one of the last people on earth to be involved in the Democratic reset,” Brune said.

Sullivan did not reply to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

“The person responsible for leading the Democrats into the trench is now looking for the key again,” said Joseph Geevarghese, executive director of progressive group Our Revolution. “Leaders like Zohran Mamdani speak directly to working class pain and show what is possible when they stand up to entrenched power.”
Despite criticism, some Democrats defend Sullivan’s role and believe he can help the party unit.
“He was a historic organizer of the diverse lanes of democratic foreign policy, and he did a great job with it,” said Joel Rubin, former Secretary of State and Democrat Strategist Deputy Director. However, Rubin questioned how much of a impact Project 2029 would have, especially without a clear 2028 front runner.
“We have a wide open primary,” Rubin said. “Unlike Project 2025, where Republicans had candidates in Trump, we don’t have a standard rep. So Project 2029 will be one of many blueprints of what Democrats should do.”
Some argue that numbers like Sullivan are better suited to bridge the gap between establishment numbers and progressives than left-wing leaders.
“He’s part of the old security guards, but the old security guards aren’t that old. There are a lot of young people,” said one Democratic insider. “It’s going to be difficult to find people in the progressive lane that will attract people at the facility, but the founding lane is working to attract progressives.”

Sullivan’s GOP critics also point to his role in promoting boring allegations now during the 2016 election.
After reports from Slate, Trump Tower allegedly amplified the claims by Sullivan (then Senior Advisor Hillary Clinton), a secret server communicating with Russia’s Alpha Bank.
“This could be the most direct link between Donald Trump and Moscow,” Sullivan said in a statement at the time. “This secret hotline may be the key to unlocking the mystery of Trump’s relationship with Russia.”
Republicans later accused him of spreading unverified information and misleading the public.
